I was asked if I would like to review the third edition of Thomas Nelson’s Full-Color NKJV Comfort Print® Study Bible. Of course I would. I love to read and study the Bible; I have for decades. I use several different translations and study Bibles in my research. However, I was stuck on using a study Bible I got over a decade ago for notes and commentary. Would this newbie hold up to my scrutiny?

When I first pulled it out of its box, I admired the beautifully crafted Cranberry Leathersoft™ cover. I also noticed it was heavy. That got me excited about the resources contained within and I got right to work. I wasn’t disappointed; this new study Bible can hold up to anyone’s scrutiny!

The spine is sturdy enough for the Bible to lie flat, no matter where you open it. I opened it to Genesis, then to Concordance, and each time it stayed flat! That was a notable good feature. The physical make-up of a Bible you buy is important, you know. You don’t want your new study Bible to fall apart in a year.

Thomas Nelson provided us several tools within this study Bible to help us understand the text. I was impressed. One of these tools includes a thorough introduction to each book of the Bible, which includes an abridged timeline of significant events that occur during the time of the book. I often ignore a book’s introductory notes, but I didn’t in this one!

Another tool are the explanations of key Biblical concepts which appear in the scripture, coordinated with the classic Strong’s Concordance. Book after book, I found the commentary enlightening, as it covered several different subjects relevant to the scripture at hand

After the book of Revelation, there are several more tools. Here, you can find a detailed subject index which coordinates with all the annotations and features. Other tools include articles about the Bible and history and what is theology; an extensive table of monies, weights, and measures; the teachings and illustrations that Jesus used; 44 prophecies about Jesus in the order that they were fulfilled, a list of prayers in the Bible, and more!

The scripture reading itself was a feast for the eyes. This Bible’s font style and size makes it easy to read. It has a slightly different but unobtrusive way of marking the text to let you know there’s a footnote, cross reference, or annotation nearby. If the verse is a prophecy, they mark it with a star in the notes.

Every few pages, there’s a chart, diagram, article, map, or color photograph of an archaeological artifact with relevant explanations. And nearly every page has detailed notes expounding on the passages above. This Bible uses colors to distinguish the different verses, and the different parts of each the verse, being commented on in the notes. I love the array of tools they gave us to study with in this Bible!

It even has, not one, but two color-coordinated ribbons to mark your place. I’m forever sticking pieces of paper, or my finger, in a spot when I research in different parts of my Bible. The Thomas Nelson NKJV Full Color Study Bible is solid, well-informed (just updated last year), beautiful, and well able to teach, correct, reprove, and train the serious student of the scripture.
